Projection: need to automatically qualify

North Dakota needs to win the Summit League tournament because its résumé offers a few legitimate road victories at the midmajor level, plus an eye-catching win over Winthrop, but it lacks a defining triumph over a high-major and is marred by several lopsided losses on hostile courts at Alabama, Nebraska and Hawaii that will be hard for a committee to overlook; those heavy defeats expose defensive inconsistency and dilute the value of wins over conference and lower-tier opponents. Remaining conference road tests are the most realistic opportunities to reshape perceptions, so absent a signature nonconference scalp there is clear logic in saying the safest route to the NCAA field is an automatic berth earned by winning the league tournament.
